Pro tip: I used to buy cheap chargers from gas stations... now I check for safety certs first

About a year ago I grabbed a $5 car charger at a random Shell station because my phone was dying. It worked for like a week then started making this weird buzzing noise... fried my phone's battery port. Now I always look for the UL or CE mark on the package before I buy used gadgets or accessories. Even on secondhand laptops I check what charger they come with. Has anyone else lost a device to a knockoff charger?

Man, that's the universe telling you "you get what you pay for" in the loudest possible way. I fried a perfectly good tablet once with a generic ebay charger that was supposed to be "universal" - turned out it was universal at catching fire. Now I half-expect any cheap charger to just burst into flames the second I plug it in. At least your phone died from a buzz, mine just started smoking and gave me a free indoor fog machine.

Is it really that serious though?
