Bought a used ThinkPad off eBay for $200 last spring, now I just swap parts instead of shopping whole new laptops.
Back in 2020 I dropped $900 on a Best Buy special that died in 14 months, but this old T480 I just upgraded the RAM and battery on for $60 feels way faster than anything new I'd waste money on, anyone else find themselves sticking with old hardware way longer than they planned?

Oh FOR SURE. My "new" laptop is a 2017 Dell Precision I picked up for $150, slapped in a $30 SSD and some used RAM from my buddy, and it runs circles around my roommate's brand new HP that cost four times as much. The thing is a brick but it's MY brick, you know? Funny how we all got tricked into thinking a new laptop every 2 years was a necessity when really it was just Planned Obsolescence marketing making us feel bad.

Actually, that refurbished route works great for some people, but it comes with real trade-offs most folks don't mention. That 2017 machine is six years old now, and while it handles email and spreadsheets fine, it's already missing security updates for older processors and won't run the latest software well. The bigger issue is the battery. Those old Dell batteries are often shot, and replacing them can cost half what you paid for the whole machine. Plus, when something finally breaks on a laptop that old, you're hunting for parts on eBay instead of just calling a warranty line. The new HP might cost more, but at least it's covered and has a fresh battery, modern ports, and years of support ahead of it. For someone who just wants a laptop to work without tinkering every few months, that cost difference starts to make sense.
