I used my grandmother's hand mixer to make bread dough last month
It started smoking after about 30 seconds and now the motor smells like burnt toast. Anyone else break an appliance by using it for the wrong job?

Did your grandmother happen to store that mixer in a damp basement or garage for a few decades? The old wiring insulation can get brittle, so putting a heavy load on it might have caused a short that fried the motor before the toast smell even kicked in. You probably killed a perfectly good mixer that was already on its last legs, not one that could have handled the job if you had just been gentler.

Honestly, are we really acting like one smoky incident means the whole thing was a ticking time bomb? Tbh, it sounds like you just overloaded an old mixer with dough that was too stiff for its motor. People act like every vintage appliance is a delicate survivor, but sometimes they just can't handle modern tasks. Ngl, it took a lot of stress to burn it out, and if the motor smelled like burnt toast after 30 seconds, it probably wasn't that great to begin with. It's not like you threw it in a river, you used it for bread. Maybe it was just time for an upgrade.
