Showerthought: My micrometer was giving weird numbers until I thought about where I left it

Turns out, leaving it near the door where drafts hit was throwing everything off. Now I keep it in a consistent spot and my measurements are reliable.

Tiny temperature shifts really matter for precision stuff like that.

Actually it's more about material expansion than precision.

Wait, you're saying a tiny shift in temperature can make a whole bridge buckle? That's wild. I always figured it took a serious heatwave. So a cold morning could actually snap a railroad track if it wasn't cut right? That's genuinely terrifying to think about.
