My neighbor and I had a heated talk about home solar panels

Last week, my neighbor showed off his new solar setup. He thinks it's the best thing for the planet. I said the making of those panels hurts the environment too. We should cut down on power use before adding solar. He didn't like that idea much.

Wait, you said the making of the panels hurts the environment too and he just blew right past that? That's the whole debate. It takes a lot of energy and some nasty stuff to make them. To act like that part doesn't count is wild. Cutting down on use first is just common sense. It's weird he wouldn't even see that as a step.

Feel your pain, and @seth_stone makes a solid point about cutting down first.

Why do people always skip the making of the stuff? Seth is totally right. It takes a crazy amount of energy and harsh chemicals to make those panels. Reducing how much we use has to be step one, it's just basic math. Skipping that part makes the whole green argument look bad.
