Shoutout to the guy at Guitar Center who talked me out of a $400 mic

I was dead set on buying this Neumann knockoff for my bedroom podcast setup, figured expensive gear would fix my muddy vocals. Some older dude working the used gear section pulled me aside and said "listen to this first" then played my voice through a $60 SM57 into a cheap interface. He showed me how moving 6 inches closer to the mic and hanging a moving blanket behind my desk chair cleaned up 80% of the room echo. Has anyone else had a salesperson actually save you money instead of upselling?

Gotta point out that the SM57 actually runs closer to $100 new, not $60, but the point stands. That old guy was right though, most bedroom podcasters waste money on gear before fixing their actual recording space. Moving blankets and proper mic technique really do make the biggest difference for way less money.

And honestly, a $20 pack of moving blankets from Harbor Freight taped to the walls will do more than a $400 mic into a treated room. I learned that the HARD way after buying a nice condenser and wondering why my voice sounded like I was recording in a bathroom.
