My mom scolded me for soggy vegetables until I changed one thing
I used to toss carrots and potatoes in the slow cooker raw at the start. My mom told me to put them on the bottom near the heat source instead. Now I layer them under the meat and they come out tender but not mushy after 6 hours on low. That one tip fixed my stews completely. Anybody else have a family member call out a bad habit like that?

Nah, raw carrots actually do fine if you cut them small enough and nestle them right against the bottom of the pot. That direct contact cooks them through without getting mushy, no head start needed. It's really all about the layering and the size of your cuts.

Wait, so you're telling me she actually laid into you over soggy carrots in a slow cooker? I honestly can't believe a parent would call that out, most just eat it and move on. That's some intense kitchen criticism right there, but hey, it clearly worked out for you.

Putting them on the bottom is key, but raw carrots still need a head start for best texture.
