My aunt told me I was ruining chili by browning meat first...

So I always browned ground beef before tossing it in the slow cooker, thought that was the way to go for flavor... but my aunt watched me do it at a family cookout and said I was 'drying it out' and losing all the good fat. She insisted I just dump raw meat straight in with everything else, no browning at all. Tried her method on a Sunday batch, and honestly it came out way more tender but the flavor was a lot flatter... no real depth. Has anyone else gotten a weird family tip that actually made things worse or better?

Did I just ruin chili and embarrass myself in front of my whole family?

No way, that sounds like a happy accident actually.
