Hot take: thrift store puzzles should come with a warning about missing pieces

Last Sunday I found a vintage 1000-piece puzzle of an old sailing ship at Goodwill for $3, got halfway through it on my coffee table before realizing half the sky was just gone. I kept digging through the box for 20 minutes like a maniac but nope, someone definitely donated it knowing pieces were missing. Has anyone else ever finished a puzzle from a thrift store and actually had all the pieces?

You mentioned "half the sky was just gone" and that's exactly the kind of thing that gets me. I swear people pick out the most scenic parts of a puzzle to keep as souvenirs or something. But here's my real question for you - did you look at the box really close before you bought it? Sometimes you can tell by the weight or if the box feels loose, like it's been taped up a few times. I've started shaking the box gently, listening for that hollow rattle that means it's barely half full.

A friend of mine bought a puzzle from a garage sale and the box felt light but she didn't think much of it. She got home and dumped it out and it was literally just the border pieces and one random corner of a windmill. She said the box had that smooth tape job you mentioned, like someone carefully resealed it with love.
