Lost $70 on a UV sterilizer that did nothing for my algae bloom

I bought a cheap UV sterilizer off Amazon back in March hoping it would finally clear up the green water in my 40 gallon display tank. Ran it for 3 weeks straight, tested the water every other day, and the algae got worse while my copepod population basically vanished. Anyone else blow cash on gear that just made things worse, or is it just me?

That part about your copepods vanishing really hits home, I used to swear by UV sterilizers as the cure all for everything. But after watching mine nuke my beneficial microfauna while leaving the string algae untouched, I flipped completely and now think they only work in very specific setups. Honestly, sometimes the cheapest fix is just cutting back light and doing more water changes, which is what finally turned my tank around.
