6 months of dinoflagellates and what finally knocked them out
I thought my tank was cycled and stable but around month 4 things went south fast. Brown slime took over everything in a week, killed two zoa colonies and my hammer coral started receding. What changed was cutting my whites from 8 hours to 4 and blasting flow with a second Jebao wavemaker. Has anyone else had dinoflagellates stick around even after blackouts?

You ran lights at 8 hours with dinos already in the tank?

@Gavinhunt, I've got to respectfully disagree with that way of thinking. I run my lights at 8 hours even when I've got dinos in the tank, and it's worked fine for me. Cutting the photoperiod down too much can actually mess with your coral health and nutrient uptake, which makes the dinos worse in the long run. The real key for me was getting my nutrients stable and keeping the flow right. I think a lot of folks blame the lights first when it's usually something else going on. But every tank is different, so I get why some people try a different approach.
