Finally figured out why my push mower kept stalling after 2 years of guessing

I was digging through my dad's old shop manual last weekend and found a note about the valve gap on my Briggs engine. Turns out it needs to be 0.006 inches for the intake and 0.008 for the exhaust, which I never knew was a thing. I set them right with a feeler gauge from Harbor Freight and the thing started on the first pull. Anybody else stumble on some tiny spec like that that solved a big headache?

Nah man, you're probably overthinking this. If it ran for 2 years without that adjustment, the valves were fine and you just got lucky with a clean carburetor or something else coincidentally fixing itself.

My buddy Mike had a old Ford Ranger that stalled out randomly for like three years. He tried everything, new plugs, wires, even swapped the ECM. Turned out the ground strap on the battery was loose, just a little corrosion. Tightened it up and it ran perfect for another four years till he sold it. Sometimes it really is the dumbest little thing that just works itself loose or corrodes enough to make contact again.
