Just realized my balcony tomatoes needed a diaper last week

I was in Detroit visiting my cousin and she mentioned putting a diaper in her hanging baskets to hold water. I thought she was joking until I tried it on a couple of my tomato pots on my small patio. Cut a newborn diaper open, mixed the gel crystals into the soil, and now I only water every 4 days instead of every single morning. Has anyone else tried this trick with their rooftop veggies?

Stop right there. Those diaper crystals are just superabsorbent polymers that will break down over time and leach some pretty sketchy chemicals into your food, no thanks.

My buddy Tom actually tried this a couple years ago with his garden... he figured he was being clever and saving money on water retention. @skyler_white95 is right though, after a few months the stuff started breaking down and his soil pH went all weird. He ended up having to replace half his raised bed soil because nothing would grow right.
