Old man at the dump told me I was sanding my table wrong.
He saw me using 80 grit on a solid oak dining table. Said I was chewing it up for no reason. Handed me a piece of 120 grit from his truck. Told me to go slow with the grain. Took me half the time and zero swirl marks. Has anyone else gotten advice from strangers that actually worked?

Actually, 80 grit on oak is fine if you know what you're doing. That old timer was just pushing his preference on you, not a universal truth.

Has he actually tried running 80 grit over a big piece of red oak with figured grain? I mean, I have done it before and it left scratches that took forever to get out with the next grit. Maybe it works fine on plain sawn stuff or if you are just doing rough shaping, but for a fine furniture finish that feels like a risky move. I would love to see his finished piece after using 80 grit as the first sanding step, idk. It just seems like the old timer gave advice for a reason, not just to be pushy.
