Vent: My coworker said 'they don't make shows like that anymore' about a 90s sitcom and I actually got mad

I was grabbing coffee in the break room yesterday and my coworker Jen goes on about how Friends is so much better than anything on Netflix now. I asked if she'd actually watched any new shows and she said no. She just assumed. That got me thinking. We all romanticize old TV because we watched it when we were kids or teens. Nothing hits like nostalgia. But I went home and put on an episode of some random 90s show and half the jokes were dated or straight up offensive now. Plus the quality is so grainy. I don't think old shows are better. I think we remember them being better. Has anyone else caught themselves defending a show you haven't seen in 10 years?

My neighbor does the SAME thing with music. He says bands from the 80s were just better and I asked him when was the last time he listened to a new album, he said 2018. That's SEVEN years ago, man. People get stuck in a comfort zone and then act like everything new is garbage. It's like when someone says movies today are all sequels and remakes but ignore that half of what they loved as a kid was also a copy of something older. We just notice it less when it's our own nostalgia. Honest opinion is based on actually looking at stuff, not on a feeling from 1994.

Yeah but hold on. Did you actually ask her why she thinks new shows are worse? Because that's the part that gets me every time. People will say something is bad without being able to point to a single reason besides "it was better back then." That's not a real opinion, that's just a feeling dressed up like a fact. If she hasn't watched a single new show then she's not comparing apples to apples. She's comparing her memory to her assumptions.
