That hilarious moment when my VHS of Titanic started playing in fast forward

I was watching my old copy of Titanic last Saturday for the third time this month, the one I recorded off CBS back in 1998. About forty five minutes in, the tape started speeding up and everyone sounded like a chipmunk. I had to pull the tape out and rethread it by hand, took me a good ten minutes to get it right. Has anyone else had a tape just go wonky like that out of nowhere?

Had that exact thing happen with my copy of The Matrix I taped off HBO. Damn tape just started eating itself around the part where Neo wakes up in the pod. Had to manually wind it back with a pencil and pray the ribbon wasn't shredded. That rethreading dance is a lost art now, nobody under 25 would last five minutes with a misbehaving VCR.

I read that you can fix a crinkled tape by freezing it.
