My buddy swore the original The Office was better than the US version

He kept saying the UK Ricky Gervais version was pure genius and I thought he was just being a snob. I finally watched 3 episodes last night and honestly I was bored stiff, not a single laugh. Is there some secret to liking that show or am I just not getting the humor at all?
