My Paladin had to choose between saving a town or his sacred armor

Last session, my level 5 Paladin had to pick between saving a burning orphanage and keeping his +1 plate armor that was about to get crushed by a collapsing support beam. I chose to dive in and save the kids, lost the armor entirely, but the DM let me roll a performance check to rally the townsfolk into rebuilding. Ended up rolling a natural 20 and got a new set of gear forged by the grateful blacksmith two weeks later. Has anyone else had a moment where losing something valuable made the story way better?

Nah man, it's plate armor not the end of the world.

Used to think keeping your gear was always the right call but stories like this prove me wrong. That performance check turning into a whole town rebuild sounds way more memorable than just keeping some fancy armor.
