My 5 year old character died last week and it turned into the best session we ever had

I had this half-elf ranger I played every other Friday for 5 years. Last session a goblin rolled a nat 20 and dropped me from full health to dead in one hit. No death saves, no last words, just a goblin with a lucky spear. I sat there for a minute thinking about how to handle it. Instead of getting mad I handed my sheet to the DM and said use him as a villain now. The DM made my old character the ghost that haunts the next dungeon. Now my new character is a rogue who hates goblins and we got a whole revenge arc going. Has anyone else turned a cheap death into something cool for the group?

Used to think cheap deaths ruined a campaign, but this totally flipped my stance.

Respect your take, but cheap deaths still bug me personally.
