Made my cat a cardboard castle from old Amazon boxes and she wont leave it

My neighbor saw me pulling tape off a box and laughed saying i was wasting my time, but i told her cats love cardboard more than fancy beds. She said her cat ignored every toy she ever bought and just played with the packaging instead, which got me thinking. Anyone else find their pet likes the stuff you make at home way more than the store bought stuff?

Read somewhere that cats are wired to like simple setups because it reminds them of hunting in the wild. My buddy's cat ignores that fancy $50 scratching post but will go nuts over a crumpled receipt on the floor. I bet your cat loves that castle because it smells like you from the tape and boxes, not some factory. Did you cut windows in the sides so she can spy on you?

Funny you mention that, I used to be one of those guys who thought cats just liked boxes because they're cheap and lazy. But my own cat proved me wrong last month. Bought her a fifty dollar cat tree with all the bells and whistles, and she spent more time sniffing the box it came in than the actual tree. So yeah, you're probably right about the smell thing. Haven't cut windows yet but now I'm thinking I should, just to see her little head poke through.
