Finally tracking every dollar spent for a month showed me where my money was really going

I got tired of never having enough at the end of the month, so I wrote down every single purchase in a notebook for 30 days. Turns out, I was spending over $200 a month on coffee and snacks from the gas station near my shop... stuff I didn't even enjoy that much. Cutting that out freed up cash to finally start a small emergency fund. Curious if anyone else has had a similar wake-up call from just writing things down.

Feel that. Seeing all the little purchases add up is a proper shock. Tracking honestly is the only way to know for sure.

That point about tracking honestly is spot on. I used to ignore small spends, but they really do pile up. When I started writing down every coffee and snack, it was eye-opening. Without that truth, you're just guessing where your money goes. It's not fun, but it's necessary if you want to control your finances. After a month, I could see clear patterns and cut back on useless buys.

Agree with @angelaf65, tracking every little thing is key. Those small spends add up so fast it's wild. What did you use to log everything, an app or old school pen and paper? I switched to an app after losing my notebook, but both work. Was it tough to stop the useless buys, or did seeing the total shock you into changing habits?
