My CRT monitor started making a high-pitched whine right in the middle of a Quake LAN party last Saturday
I had to pull the back off and reseat the flyback transformer with a plastic screwdriver, which fixed the noise but now the colors are all washed out, anyone know a good way to recalibrate these old Sony Trinitrons without buying a $200 colorimeter?

Honestly, I had a similar thing happen with my old Dell monitor. I found that running the built-in degauss cycle a few times helped bring the colors back, and then I just eyeballed the RGB settings in the menu until it looked like it used to. Not perfect but close enough for Quake.

Wait, degauss? Like the old CRT monitors with the big ass tubes? I haven't heard that word in a decade. I thought you had to like smack the side of those things to get the colors right. Honestly I'm just shocked you still have one of those kicking around and playing Quake on it. That's wild man, I can't even remember the last time I saw one of those in person. I figured everyone trashed them for flat screens years ago.
