Had to pick between fixing my old CRT or buying a used one
Honestly, my trusty Sony Trinitron from 2003 finally gave out last month. The picture started getting this weird green tint no matter what I tweaked. I sat there for a day deciding between spending maybe $40 on replacement capacitors and solder or grabbing a $50 CRT off Facebook Marketplace. I went with the repair route because I've got a soft spot for this specific model. Took me about 3 hours with a soldering iron and a YouTube guide, but the colors came back perfect. Has anyone else fixed an old CRT from the early 2000s and found it was just a capacitor issue?

That "rolling the dice on some random Marketplace unit" part is spot on. My buddy Tom bought a "fully working" 27 inch Toshiba off there and it had a dead horizontal deflection circuit within a week. He ended up scrapping it for parts and buying a different one.

Oh yeah, that green tint is almost always bad caps. I had a 2002 Toshiba that started doing the same thing about two years ago. Pulled it apart, found three leaking capacitors near the flyback transformer. Spent like $8 on new ones from Digikey and it was good as new. There's something really satisfying about bringing an old set back to life with just a soldering iron and a few parts. Definitely beats rolling the dice on some random Marketplace unit where you don't know what condition it's really in.
