That weird concrete shell I found on a hike near Flagstaff last weekend
I was out on the trails up by Lockett Meadow on Saturday and came across this big concrete dome thing sitting in the middle of nowhere. Maybe 12 feet across with a little door that was rusted shut. I looked it up later and apparently it's an old fire lookout foundation from the 50s that never got finished. Has anyone else stumbled onto something like that and managed to get inside or find out the story behind it?

Hang on, you sure that's a fire lookout foundation? I've seen those before and they're usually way smaller and have steel beam anchors sticking out. A 12 foot concrete dome sounds more like an old military radar shelter or weather station housing. The Forest Service abandoned a bunch of those up north in the 60s. Check if there's any ventilation slots on the top or cable conduits around the base. That would tell you a lot more than some website guess.

I mean, @dylanward might be right that it's something military, but honestly who cares whether it's a lookout or a radar shelter? It's a locked concrete shell in the woods. Not exactly a mystery that needs solving.
