I finally gave up my feather collection after 8 years and switched to pressed flowers

Used to spend every weekend digging through park bushes in Columbus for stray feathers, but after a moldy incident in 2023 I moved to pressing wildflowers instead. Anyone else swap a messy collection for something that's easier to store?

Do you think we all just go through phases where we trade one thing for a less messy version of the same hobby? I noticed my sister did that with seashells and rocks, then moved to sea glass.

Oh man, yeah I heard this thing on a podcast a while back about how people collect stuff as a way to control a small piece of their environment... the speaker said it's like we're trying to find order in chaos, but then we get bored with the mess and upgrade to the less messy version. Like your sister going from rocks and shells to sea glass, that's basically the same urge but with less dirt and sand involved... I've seen it with my buddy who used to collect vinyl records and now only buys digital files, which is way cleaner but he still spends hours organizing his playlists. It's like we're always trying to simplify the same obsession.
