Nearly gave up on making dollhouse rugs until I tried a $2 rug hook

I spent months trying to make miniature hooked rugs for my dollhouse using a standard sewing needle. The loops were uneven and the backing kept tearing. Then a woman at a craft swap showed me a real rug hooking tool she got for $2 at a thrift store. It has a little latch that grabs the yarn and pulls it through in one smooth motion. After three tries my rug looked like something from a real furniture catalog. Now I'm redoing all my floors. Anyone else find a random tool that fixed your whole process?

Wait, did you have trouble with the yarn fraying at the ends too? I had the same problem with a different craft, trying to make little miniature tassels for a lampshade. I was using regular scissors and the threads just split apart. Then I found this old pair of embroidery scissors at my mom's house, the ones with the really fine points. They cut through the yarn so clean it was like magic. Now I won't use anything else for detail work either. It's funny how one little tool can just kill all the frustration.

Funny how that works across different crafts too, @paul_morgan. I've noticed the same pattern with kitchen knives - a dull blade crushes tomatoes instead of slicing them, same principle with yarn and scissors. Once you find that right tool for the job, everything else just feels like fighting against what you're trying to do lol.
