My film professor said 'just trust the director' - what a joke that was
Back in my sophomore year at Community College of Denver, Professor Hayes told me to 'just trust the director' when a movie's plot seemed confusing. I took that advice into 'The Empty Hourglass', a 2017 indie film about time travel. Halfway through, the main character talks to his dead mom in present day, then his dead self in 1985, and suddenly the whole town turns to sand. I still don't know if the director meant that or just ran out of budget. Has anyone else gotten burned by that 'trust the creator' advice?

Gently push back on that title though - 'The Empty Hourglass' isn't a 2017 indie film, it's a 2015 short film by some guy named Marcus Webb that barely showed at like two film festivals. I remember looking it up after a friend kept raving about it. But you're right about the 'trust the creator' advice being risky, especially for lower budget stuff where they might just be making it up as they go. Maybe that professor meant trust established directors like Denis Villeneuve or someone with a solid track record, not random indie dudes who let the town crumble into sand because they ran out of money for a real ending.
