Debate: Did 'Donnie Darko's' time loop actually make sense, or was it just cool vibes covering up lazy writing?

I got into it with a guy at a coffee shop in Portland last month who swore the entire plot hinged on a consistent causal loop, but I kept pointing out that Frank the rabbit's existence before the plane engine falls breaks that theory completely, so which side do you guys land on?

My buddy Mike, who's a projectionist at an old theater downtown, broke it down for me one night after a late showing. He said the time loop works like a piece of string tied in a knot - it only looks clean from one angle. The real problem is the whole "Frank knowing about the future before he dies" thing, which is basically a paradox that the movie never bothers to explain. Isn't the whole point of a time loop story that it's supposed to hold up under scrutiny? The director just wanted cool shots of a creepy rabbit, and that's fine, but don't tell me there's some hidden genius plot underneath.
