Debate: Should a remixed meme keep the original format or change it completely for the joke to land better?

I ran into this guy Mark at the Comic Book Cafe last Saturday who swore a black-and-white Loss comic reworked with Star Wars dialogue was the peak of remix culture, but my buddy Jen says you gotta swap the whole panel layout or it's just lazy so which side actually gets the laugh?

Uhh, Loss is a four-panel comic, not black-and-white with dialogue.

My coworker Dave tried to remix that "This Is Fine" dog comic for a work presentation. He kept the same three panels but swapped the dog's dialogue with his own frustrated emails. Nobody in the meeting laughed because they didn't realize it was a remix at all. He said it taught him that if you don't change the format, people just think you're bad at drawing dogs on fire.
