Vent: My best day of birdhouse building turned into a total bust

Last Saturday I had everything laid out perfect on my porch - scrap wood, a hammer, and about 40 nails I found in an old coffee can. I was making a simple bluebird box based on a plan from my grandpa, and for the first hour everything fit together like magic. Then I realized I measured the entrance hole wrong and drilled it 1 1/4 inches instead of 1 1/2 inches, which means no bluebirds will use it. Has anyone else messed up a simple build because of one bad measurement?

Read somewhere that chickadees actually prefer the smaller holes sometimes. Might be worth painting the old hole over and re-drilling if you've got the wood left. Better than tossing the whole project and starting from scratch.

Chickadees are cavity nesters, so they'll use whatever fits. Patching over a hole that's already there just seems like more work than it's worth, especially if the wood's in decent shape.
