Serious question about Ikea furniture assembly: why does everyone ignore the hammer?

Visited a friend's apartment in Portland last weekend and saw their Billy bookcase held together with zip ties because they tossed the wooden dowels, and nobody talks about how a simple rubber mallet fixes 90% of those wobbly shelf problems without needing a single power tool - has anyone else just used a block of wood and a rock to tap things flush?

That story about your buddy throwing zip ties is honestly hilarious because I've seen that same exact anger when someone realizes they overcomplicated things. A block of scrap wood and a mallet is my go to method for getting panels flush without splitting anything, especially on those IKEA cam locks that need a solid tap to seat right. Did he ever admit the mallet method worked better, or did he double down on the zip ties?

I had a buddy in college who swore zip ties were the ultimate furniture fix. He built an entire Malm dresser with nothing but zip ties and pure hatred for those little wooden pegs. It looked like a modern art piece from across the room, but the drawers sagged so bad you could only use the top two. I brought over a rubber mallet and a chunk of 2x4 from my car, tapped those dowels in place, and the whole thing was solid in ten minutes. He was so mad he threw the zip ties at me and said I ruined his "aesthetic.
