Here's my take: hand sanding vs chemical stripper for old furniture, I'm torn

Honestly, hand sanding is the move for old furniture. Chemical strippers are too messy and can mess up the wood grain. Sanding gives you way more control, especially on detailed stuff. Just use a good respirator and some patience. Strippers are for lazy people who don't care about the piece.

Totally agree with @robin_campbell36 on sanding being the way to go. I restored an old dresser last year and tried chemical stripper first, biggest mistake ever. The grain got all fuzzy and I spent twice as long fixing it after. Switched to hand sanding with some 80 grit to start and it was night and day, way easier to see what you're actually doing. Patience is key though, you really gotta take your time on the carvings and edges.
