I've been told I'm old-fashioned, but I think mastering impressioning is a skill every locksmith should have, not just a party trick.

Doubt it's that crucial now. @hernandez.barbara is right, newer locks don't even work like that.

Honestly, calling it a required skill is a bit much these days. The locks being put on houses now are mostly different on the inside, not made for that old method. It's a cool thing to know for sure, and it teaches you a lot about how locks work, but it's not something we use on the job much anymore. Picking or decoding gets you in faster without damaging anything. I'd call it a neat trick for specific old locks, not a must-have for every job.
