Tried reviving a dead sourdough starter with honey instead of sugar, now it smells like a barn and has angry bubbles
I left it alone for 8 months after my grandma passed and figured a spoonful of honey would wake it up faster than plain flour, but now the jar is practically vibrating on the counter and I'm scared to open it - anyone else's starter get weird when you switch up the feeding?
Open that jar before it opens itself. Honey has natural antibacterial stuff that kills off some bacteria and lets others go wild, so you basically created a science experiment gone wrong. Throw a glove on, open it outside, and stir in some flour and water like normal. The barn smell means it's probably fine just pissed off, but if it smells like vomit or nail polish remover then toss it. Grandma would want you to start fresh anyway.
