How I handle different opinions when laying batts with a partner
We take turns trying each other's way on a small section first. Seeing the results side by side usually makes the best choice clear.

Yeah that side by side test is key. We had a debate about cutting batts around ductwork versus stuffing them behind. Did one square foot each way and instantly saw the cut piece lay flat while the stuffed one puckered. Another time we argued over rolling batts out toward you or away, and the away method won because it kept the paper facing right. What's the weirdest method you've had to test out?

Last year, my buddy and I had a huge fight over whether to tear batts or use full widths around outlets. We finally cut two small pieces, one torn and one full, and laid them next to each other. The torn one fit so much tighter without any gaps. It was like a lightbulb moment, and we both just started laughing. Seeing it right there in front of us ended the argument for good. Your ductwork story totally hits home, that side-by-side proof is everything.

My friend Mark and his brother almost came to blows in their garage over chalk line techniques. They were marking plywood for a shed floor and couldn't agree on whether to snap a line or stretch it tight and pluck it. They finally did a two foot test of each method right next to each other. The plucked line was perfectly straight, but the snapped one had a tiny wiggle in it from the string dragging. They just stared at the two lines for a minute and all the anger went away. Mark said it was the quietest his brother had been all weekend.
