I quit assuming thermostats are accurate

I used to go by the display, but a faulty sensor meant a wasted job. Now I always check with my gauge, and it saves so much hassle.

Are we really at the point where every thermostat needs a backup gauge? Most home systems are pretty close, and a degree off won't ruin your day. I had one that read 72 but felt like 70, and life went on. Unless you're running a lab or something, it seems like extra work for little gain. Trusting the display usually works out fine.

Nah, even a degree off wastes money over time.

Wait, two degrees off and you just went with it? That's not "close" that's your system working way harder than it needs to. If it reads 72 but is actually 70, your heat runs non stop to hit a number it never reaches. That's a huge waste and why my bill was so high with my old unit. You're paying to heat a ghost number.
