Hot take: Pulling out old tiles led to a historical puzzle...
I was fixing up the bathroom in my old house, pulling out tiles that someone probably put in decades ago... Behind them, I found a small metal box with some faded photos and a map drawn on what looks like butcher paper. The map has marks for spots around town, but some of the places don't exist anymore... It's making me wonder if there's a lost story here, maybe about bootlegging in Prohibition times or something. I've asked around at the library, but records from that time are spotty. Does anyone know how to track down these kinds of clues without spending a lot of cash? It's kind of addictive, trying to solve a mystery that's been sitting in my walls for who knows how long. Has anyone else hit on something like this while working on their place?

My friend found love letters from the 1920s stuffed in a floor vent once... they were so faded we could barely read them. Makes you wonder what gets forgotten in these old places.

Seriously, that's a cool find. I hit something similar in my attic last year, ended up with a box of ration coupons. Try the local historical society first; they usually have old maps and photos for free. Also, search online for scanned city directories from the 1920s, they're often put up by libraries.

My buddy found a whole stash of old baseball cards behind some loose bricks in his basement wall. They were from the 1940s and still in pretty good shape!
