Appreciation post: The hidden lake spot I shared online isn't so hidden anymore, and I regret it.

People always say to share hidden gems, but I think it can ruin them. Does anyone stop to think about the impact?

A hiking blog last year mentioned a quiet canyon in Utah. Now the parking lot is full every weekend and there's trash everywhere. Why do we feel the need to post every secret spot online?

But isn't it mostly about validation? Like, does sharing a secret spot online just feed that need to be the one who 'found' it first, to get those likes and that attention, even if it means wrecking the place for everyone after? I wonder if the short term high of going viral is worth the long term loss of a cool, quiet spot. The payoff seems pretty weak compared to what gets lost, lol.

But isn't that just how things go? Places get found eventually anyway.
