Just realized my old way of checking headspace was a bit off
An older smith at a meet in Boise watched me use a field gauge and said, 'Kid, you're just checking go/no-go, you're not feeling the bolt.' He showed me how to really feel for that slight drag with a fresh gauge set. I switched to his method and now I catch tight chambers I would have missed before. Anyone else have a simple check they learned that made a big difference?

@eva_henderson22 yep, feeling the drag is the real trick.

Eva's point about missing tight chambers is pretty eye opening. How often were you running into barrels that felt fine with the gauge but just didn't cycle right after that? I'm still getting a feel for that drag, and it seems like the kind of thing that takes a lot of practice to trust.

That "feeling the bolt" thing is a great way to put it. I used to just look for the click myself, and I'm sure I let some sketchy stuff slide because of it. It's one of those simple changes that makes you feel a bit silly for not doing it sooner.
