PSA: Designing my friend's wedding invites has me stuck on layout ideas.

I keep overthinking the balance between text and images. How do you break out of a design rut?

Try a strict grid layout. Like three columns max. Forces you to pick the best image and text combo.

My last portfolio looked like a yard sale flyer before I tried a three column grid. @the_jennifer is right, it makes you kill your darlings hard. I had to admit most of my work was just okay, not great. Now everything fits in neat little boxes, just like my basic understanding of design.

Seriously though, once you start using that grid it kills your indecision too... you just run out of room for the filler stuff. It forces a kind of brutal editing that actually feels good after a while. The clean final thing is worth the pain of cutting.
