My Portland client wanted a logo that was 'like a bird, but also a mountain, and maybe a book'

I spent a full week on 30 different sketches, and they picked the first one I made (which I thought was the worst). It made me wonder if showing too many options is a bad idea, or if you just need that one perfect hit. Has anyone else had a client pick the rough draft over the polished stuff?

Last year I showed a client three logo ideas and they went with the messy thumbnail from my notebook. Now I only show two or three polished options max. Showing too many can make them overthink it, and that first idea often has the raw energy they wanted all along. It's a tough lesson to learn after putting in all that extra work.

@rubyreed's story proves clients often pick the rough sketch with the most life in it.

It's not just about the raw energy though. Sometimes that first sketch just nails the brief in a way the overworked ones lose.
