My garden gnome rescue mission backfired when the epoxy gave out halfway home
I found this vintage ceramic gnome with a chipped hat at a garage sale in Portland for $3, tried to fix it with super glue on the spot, and five minutes later the pieces were sliding apart in my bag while the seller watched me panic - is it better to just leave broken gnomes as-is or attempt repairs that might make them worse?

Are you kidding me, that's almost a zen koan about trying too hard to fix things? I used to be all about "save the gnome at any cost" but your story just flipped my switch. There's something kind of honest about leaving a gnome with its battle scars, you know, like it lived a life. Plus now if I epoxy something and fail, I can just call it a "vintage repair attempt" and it adds value. Sometimes the broken pieces tell a better story than the perfect fix.

That "vintage repair attempt" bit got me thinking. I bought a lamp from a thrift store once that had a crack in the base, and the previous owner had tried to fill it with some sort of neon green putty. It looked terrible but the cashier said it made the lamp "unique" and priced it higher than the ones without cracks. I still bought it because she was right, that ugly green stripe is the only thing I remember about that lamp. So yeah, maybe a failed repair just adds character. Or at least a good story if the epoxy gives out again.
