I finally figured out why my key kept getting stuck in the same door
For about six months, I'd have to jiggle my apartment key a certain way to get it to turn in the lock. I just thought the lock was old. Then last Tuesday, I was leaving for my shift at 5 AM and I saw my neighbor, Mrs. Chen, use her key on her identical door. She slid it in smooth, turned it once, and it opened. No jiggle. That's when it hit me. I'd been using the wrong key the whole time. I was using my old mailbox key, which looked almost the same, on my apartment door. It fit just enough to make me think it was right. Has anyone else had a thing like this, where you were so sure you were right until one tiny detail showed you weren't?

A locksmith on a podcast said this happens more than people admit. He called it key blindness, where your brain fills in the gaps from muscle memory. You only notice when the routine breaks.

Used to think it was just being forgetful. That key blindness idea makes a lot more sense.

Muscle memory is real, but calling it blindness feels off. My brain just checks out during routines, it doesn't make up details. The difference is noticing versus creating a false memory.
