Trying to cut a simple oval mirror turned into a 3-hour geometry lesson

The homeowner wanted a custom oval for their bathroom, and I figured I'd freehand the template. After two failed attempts, I had to dig out my old high school protractor and actually calculate the ellipse. Anyone else have a 'simple' job that spiraled like that?
