I thought using a soap and water mix for setting auto glass was just a messy old trick.
My boss in Cleveland had me try it on a tricky windshield job last month, and it gave me way more time to get the placement perfect before it set. I was sure it would leave streaks or cause seal issues, but after it dried and cured, the bond was rock solid and the finish was clean. Has anyone else switched back to this method for certain jobs, or do you stick with the commercial setting tapes?

Yeah, that "messy old trick" is a lifesaver. I had the same worry about it being clean, but it dries totally clear. I keep a spray bottle of the mix in my kit now for anything with a complex curve.

That "lifesaver" feeling is something I see all the time. People get so stuck on finding the perfect new tool, but the best fix is usually a simple, proven method. It's a good reminder that clever beats complicated most days.

Remember when my buddy tried that fancy gel and it peeled right off?
