I keep seeing beginners heat their punty rod way too fast

At the studio yesterday, a new guy was trying to attach a punty and kept cracking the piece. He had the rod in the flame for maybe 30 seconds, glowing bright orange. That's way too hot, too fast. The glass needs to heat evenly from the tip back, or you get thermal shock. How do you all teach the right speed for heating a punty?

Yeah, that "glowing bright orange" thing is a classic beginner mistake, I mean I've seen it crack so many pieces.

Hold on, that's not always the case. Sometimes you need that serious heat to get a proper melt going, especially with certain materials. Calling it a beginner mistake just ignores a whole side of the craft.

Funny how everyone's an expert until their own thing breaks.
