I always thought a full face shield was overkill for small torch work, but a hot shard hit my cheek last Tuesday and changed my mind.

Honestly, "a hot shard hit my cheek" is the exact kind of story that makes you rethink stuff. I saw a video where a guy got a tiny piece of slag in his eye from a small grinder, and it was enough for me. Safety gear isn't a joke.

Ouch, is your cheek okay? I mean, that's the kind of wake-up call you really don't want. I guess it's easy to skip the gear until something actually happens.

Wait, "a tiny piece of slag in his eye from a small grinder" is actually a bit off. Slag is from welding, not grinding. Grinding throws off sparks and metal dust, but slag is that crusty stuff that comes off a weld. Still scary for sure, but different tools, different hazards. I wear safety glasses even just using a wire brush on a drill now, learned that the hard way after getting a wire bristle stuck in my forearm once.
