Spent three days trying to identify a weird green mineral in a granite sample from Colorado. It was just chlorite staining.

Ugh that's the worst, right? Read somewhere that chlorite can look like a bunch of other minerals. Total time sink.

I get what you mean about it being a time sink, but honestly I love that part. For me, figuring out it was just chlorite after three days of checking books and comparing luster is the whole fun of the hobby. The dead ends are where you actually learn stuff.
