I used to think a cheap rock hammer was fine, but a $45 Estwing changed everything

I was trying to split a piece of granite for a display and my old hammer just bounced off (it was honestly kind of embarrassing). The Estwing's weight and balance let me get a clean break on the first solid hit. Anyone have a favorite spot for finding good basalt around the PNW?

Watched a buddy chip away at a slate slab for an hour with a hardware store hammer. He borrowed my old Estwing and finished the job in three swings. Felt a little bad for him.

Okay but like, is it really that big of a deal? I mean, a hammer is a hammer. My old one from a garage sale splits firewood just fine. Maybe your granite was just being stubborn that day. I see what @alice_harris35 is saying, but an hour for slate sounds like a technique problem, not a tool problem. Idk, maybe it's just me but dropping fifty bucks on a hammer seems wild when the cheap one gets the job done eventually.
