Can we talk about using a cheap rock hammer versus a proper Estwing for splitting granite in the field?
After breaking two $15 hammers last month trying to get a decent sample from the Barre granite quarry, I finally caved and bought the Estwing, and it went through the same rock in three clean strikes without even chipping.

It's the same thing with almost any tool honestly, pay once cry once or pay every weekend lol. Probably applies to a lot of life stuff too, like cheap shoes or a bad mattress.

What kind of cheap hammers were you using before? I've seen some that are basically just case hardened steel and they'll just flatten out on hard stone.

Oh man, @butler.mark, you just described my old hammer perfectly. It looked like a mushroom after a weekend of hard use. I finally spent the extra twenty bucks for a decent one and it was a total game changer.
